The aim of this research was to examine effects of cigarette smoking on depression and anxiety among children and adolescents (youth) with early onset schizophrenia and/or psychosis. Data were obtained from the national evaluation of the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and Their Families Program (CMHS Program). Cubic mixed models were used to analyze the longitudinal data with seven waves (over 3 years). Results showed that 29% youth (N = 117, mean age at intake = 13.9) smoked cigarettes in any prior 6-month period. Cigarette users had high levels of initial and sustained depression and anxiety throughout the seven waves. Predicted depression and anxiety scores of cigarette users and non-users showed that cigarette users had higher but more stable states of anxiety and depression. Results suggested that youth with EOS might use cigarettes for mood regulation. Implications of results for psychologists and counsellors in schools are discussed.

Commission 25 (C25) deals with the techniques and issues involved with the measurement of optical and infrared radiation intensities and polarization from astronomical sources. As such, in recent years attention has focused on photometric standard stars, atmospheric extinction, photometric passbands, transformation between systems, nomenclature, and observing and reduction techniques. At the start of the trimester C25 changed its name from Stellar Photometry and Polarization to Astronomical Photometry and Polarization so as to explicitly include in its mandate particular issues arising from the measurement of resolved sources, given the importance of photometric redshifts of distant galaxies for many of the large photometric surveys now underway. We begin by summarizing commission activities over the 2012-2014 period, follow with a report on Polarimetry, continue with Photometry topics that have been of interest to C25 members, and conclude with a Vision for the Future.

Spintronics utilizes spin or magnetism to provide new ways to store and process information and is primarily associated with the utilization of spin polarized currents in memory and logic devices. With the end of silicon transistor technology in sight, spintronics can provide new paradigms for information processing and storage. Compared to charge based electronics, the advantages of magnetism/spin based devices are nonvolatility and ultra low power. In particular, magnetoresistive random access memories (MRAMs) are known to be “Rad Hard” [HXNV0100 64K x 16 Non-Volatile Magnetic RAM (www.honeywell.com/aerospace), S. Gerardin and A. Paccagnella, IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci.57(6), 3016–3039 (2010), R.R. Katti, J. Lintz, L. Sundstrom, T. Marques, S. Scoppettuolo, and D. Martin, Proceedings of IEEE Radiation Effects Data Workshop, 103–105 (2009)] and are considered to be critical components for space and military systems due to their very low power consumption and nonvolatility. However, advances in the magnetic nanostructures and new materials for the scalability of MRAM and other potential applications require a re-evaluation of their radiation hardness. This review focuses mainly on recent progress in understanding the effects of irradiation on the magnetic materials and magnetic structures that are related to MRAM technology. Up to date, the most pronounced effects on the microstructures and the properties are linked to the displacement damage associated with heavy ion irradiation; however, the thermal effect is also important as it acts as an annealing process to recover the damage partially. Critical metrics for the magnetic tunnel junctions for postmortem characterizations will also be discussed. Finally, with the introduction of new perpendicular magnetic layers and the very thin MgO barrier layer in the next generation MRAM, the effects of the ionization damage shall be studied in the future.

In the companion paper (Chen & Yeh, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 749, 2014, pp. 577–596), collisions of counter-propagating solitary waves were studied experimentally by analysing the measured water-surface variations. Here we study the flow fields associated with the collisions. With the resolved velocity data obtained in the laboratory, the flow fields are analysed in terms of acceleration, vorticity, and velocity-gradient tensors in addition to the velocity field. The data show that flow acceleration becomes maximum slightly before and after the collision peak, not in accord with the linear theory which predicts the maximum acceleration at the collision peak. Visualized velocity-gradient-tensor fields show that fluid parcels are stretched vertically prior to reaching the state of maximum wave amplitude. After the collision peak, fluid parcels are stretched in the horizontal direction. The boundary-layer evolution based on the vorticity generation and diffusion processes are discussed. It is shown that flow separation occurs at the bed during the collision. The collision creates small dispersive trailing waves. The formation of the trailing waves is captured by observing the transition behaviour of the velocity-gradient-tensor field: the direction of stretching of fluid parcels alternates during the generation of the trailing waves.

Summary
Introduction
Normal blood vessels consist of three layers, including the tunica intima, the tunica media, and the tunica adventitia [1]. Each structural layer consists of distinct cell and matrix types. A monolayer of endothelial cells (ECs) lines the lumen of blood vessels to provide a continuous, selectively permeable, hemo-compatible blood-contacting surface. Meanwhile, ECs play a key role in various physiological and pathological processes including blood supply, metabolic homeostasis, immune cell trafficking, and inflammation [2]. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and pericytes cover the outside of the endothelium, protect the fragile channels from rupture, and contribute to the contraction and relaxation of the vessels [3]. The vascular wall extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of structural proteins such as collagen and elastin and adhesion proteins such as fibronectin and laminin that determine mechanical strength, cell response, and ultimately hierarchical tissue organization [4]. An intact and functioning vasculature is crucial in order to maintain homeostasis and provides necessary nutrients and oxygen exchange to all parts of the body.
Diseases that affect the integrity of blood vessels lead to serious and often deadly outcomes. Vascular diseases are the major causes of morbidity around the world [5]. At present, approximately 12 million people in the USA are affected by peripheral vascular disease, but only approximately one in four of them has been diagnosed and is receiving treatment [6]. EC and SMC pathology has been implicated in various vascular diseases [7–10]. Current important therapeutic options for vascular disease incorporate the surgical implantation of stents or grafts and greatly reconstruct impaired vascular function to drain downstream tissues and organs. However, the implanted grafts may incompletely recover the functional integrity of the vasculature. In addition, these therapeutic methods neither provide long-lasting solutions nor prevent damage to downstream tissues and organs [11]. In this scenario, cell-based engineered vessel grafts may offer the opportunity to permanently and effectively treat many vascular diseases [11]. The regeneration of some or all of the vessel layers and their original properties may provide potentially functional vascular grafts. The use of autologous bypass grafts, including saphenous vein, internal mammary artery, and radial artery bypass grafts, remains an important therapeutic option for the treatment of coronary artery disease. However, many patients do not have a vessel suitable for use because of concomitant vascular disease, amputation, or previous harvest, and hence artificial grafts must also be used [12].

Most biological materials are hierarchically structured composites that often possess exceptional mechanical properties. We show that nanoindentation can be a powerful tool for understanding the structure‑mechanical property relationship of biological materials and illustrate this for fish teeth and scales, not heretofore investigated at the nanoscale. Piranha and shark teeth consist of enameloid and dentin. Nanoindentation measurements show that the reduced modulus and hardness of enameloid are 4‑5 times higher than those of dentin. Arapaima scales are multilayered composites that consist of mineralized collagen fibers. The external layer is more highly mineralized, resulting in a higher modulus and hardness compared with the internal layer. Alligator gar scales are composed of a highly mineralized external ganoin layer and an internal bony layer. Similar design strategies, gradient structures, and a hard external layer backed by a more compliant inner layer are exhibited by fish teeth and scales and seem to fulfill their functional purposes.

Just-in-time ( JIT) Educational Strategy has been applied successfully to share scientific knowledge about disasters in several countries. This strategy was introduced to China in 2008 with the hopes to quickly disseminate accurate scientific data to the population, and it was applied during the Sichuan Earthquake and Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak. Implementation of this strategy likely educated between 10,000 and 20,000,000 people. The efforts demonstrated that an effective JIT strategy impacted millions of people in China after a disaster occurs as a disaster mitigation education method. This paper describes the Chinese JIT approach, and discusses methodologies for implementing JIT lectures in the context of China's medical and public health system.

Three new dynamic tensor thermal diffusivity subgrid-scale (SGS) heat flux (HF) models are proposed for large-eddy simulation of thermal convection. The constitutive relations for the proposed modelling approaches represent the most general explicit algebraic formulations possible for the family of SGS HF models constructed using the resolved temperature gradient and SGS stress tensor. As a result, these three new models include a number of previously proposed dynamic SGS HF models as special cases. In contrast to the classical dynamic eddy thermal diffusivity SGS HF model, which strictly requires the SGS heat flux be aligned with the negative of the resolved temperature gradient, the three new models proposed here admit more degrees of freedom, and consequently provide a more realistic geometrical and physical representation of the SGS HF vector. To validate the proposed models, numerical simulations have been performed based on two benchmark test cases of neutrally and unstably stratified horizontal channel flows.

English as the global (if not the universal) language reflects a hegemony of the past as well as of the present: both a continuation of the British Empire (and thus demonized as a former colonial language) and, as the preferred language of international business and capitalist development throughout the world, resented as a powerful neo-colonial language. Yet, as this study seeks to show, English is capable of acting against its own imperialisms, to undermine its own hegemony.

Ease of computation of Fréchet-optimal lower bounds, given numerical values of the binomial moments Sij, i, j = 1, 2, is demonstrated. A sufficient condition is given for an explicit bivariate bound of Dawson-Sankoff structure to be Fréchet optimal. An example demonstrates that in the bivariate case even the multiplicative structure of the Sij does not guarantee a Dawson-Sankoff structure for Fréchet-optimal bounds. A final section is used to illuminate the nature of Fréchet optimality by using generalized explicit bounds. This note is a sequel to both Chen and Seneta (1995) and Chen (1998).

The crystal structure of the photoprotein obelin (22.2 kDa) from Obelia longissima has been determined and refined to 1.7 Å resolution. Contrary to the prediction of a peroxide, the noncovalently bound substrate, coelenterazine, has only a single oxygen atom bound at the C2-position. The protein-coelenterazine 2-oxy complex observed in the crystals is photo-active because, in the presence of calcium ion, bioluminescence emission within the crystal is observed. This structure represents only the second de novo protein structure determined using the anomalous scattering signal of the sulfur substructure in the crystal. The method used here is theoretically different from that used for crambin in 1981 (4.72 kDa) and represents a significant advancement in protein crystal structure determination.

Device-quality a-Si:H films were prepared by glow discharge CVD with pure or H-diluted silane as well as by hot-wire CVD. The hydrogen content was varied from ∼2 to 15 at. %. The Si-H bond absorption and its light-soaking-induced changes were studied by IR and differential IR absorption spectroscopes. The results indicate that the more stable sample exhibits an increase of the absorption at wave number ∼2000 cm−1, and the less stable one exhibits a decrease at ∼2040 cm−1and an increase at ∼1880 cm−1.

The understanding of the electric contact formation process is critical in exploiting the full potential of Cd1−xZnxTe(CZT) material for room temperature detection applications. The metalsemiconductor electrical characteristics were shown in this study to be strongly affected by the surface preparation steps prior to metallization (polishing, and chemical etching), the choice of the metal and contact deposition technique, and by the subsequent surface passivation of CdZnTe. In this paper, we also present the implementation new detector fabrication processing stepsresulting in a significant lowering of the dark leakage current and an improvement in the detector performance.
